Isabel Carlos

É licenciada em Filosofia pela Universidade de Coimbra e mestre em Comunicação Social pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa com a tese «Performance ou a Arte num Lugar Incómodo» (1993). Crítica de arte desde 1991. Assessora para a área de exposições de Lisboa’94 – Capital Europeia da Cultura. Foi co-fundadora e subdirectora do Instituto de Arte Contemporânea, tutelado pelo Ministério da Cultura. Foi membro dos júris da Bienal de Veneza (2003), do Turner Prize (2010), The Vincent Award (2013), entre outros. Co-seleccionadora do Ars Mundi, Cardiff (2008). Entre as inúmeras exposições que organizou, destacam-se: Bienal de Sidney «On Reason and Emotion» (2004), «Intus» de Helena Almeida, Pavilhão de Portugal, Bienal de Veneza (2005), «Provisions for the Future», Bienal de Sharjah (2009). Entre 2009 e 2015 foi directora do CAM-Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisboa.

 

Degree in Philosophy by Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra (1987). Post-graduation and Master’s Degree in Social Communication, Departamento de Comunicação Social, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa; thesis: “Performance: Art in an Uncanny Place” (1993). Head adviser for the Exhibitions Department in Lisboa 94, Cultural Capital of Europe (co-coordination of a program of 25 exhibitions). Artistic director of Sydney Bienniale 2004 “On Reason and Emotion”, Sydney (several museums). Curator for the Portuguese Representation in Venice Biennale, June-October 2005. Selector of Artes Mundi 2008, Cardiff (Great Britain). Jury member of Venice Biennial Best Pavillion (2003), Turner Prize (2010), The Vincent Award (2013) among others. . Founder and Deputy Director between 1996 and 2001 of the Instituto de Arte Contemporânea (IAC) of the Portuguese Ministry of Culture where she runs during 3 years an international collection and organized the Portuguese representations to: Venice Biennial (2001), London Art Biennial 2000, São Paulo Biennial (1996 and 1998), Istanbul (1997 and 1999) among others activities. Among others she curated the following exhibitions and subsequent catalogues: “Sublime”, Museu do Chiado, Lisboa 1994; “The Day After Tomorrow”, Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisboa 1994; “Mediations”, Palácio Galveias and Museu do Chiado, Lisboa 1997; “Eve’s - Paula Soares”, Triennial of India, New Delhi, 1997; “Entrada Azul – Helena Almeida retrospective”, Casa da América, Madrid 1998; “Trading Images”- one year international exhibition cycle with one-person shows of Adriana Varejão, Eugenio Dittborn, Narelle Jubelin, Museu da Cidade, Lisboa 1998; “Initiare”, Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisboa 2000; “Inhabitated Drawing – Helena Almeida”, Drawing Center, New York, 2004; «Taking Time», MARCO, Vigo 2007 (Spain)., «Between the Lines», Museu das Comunicações, Lisboa 2008; Sharjah Biennial 2009. Director of CAM-Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon (2009-2015).
