Pope Francis: “I am pleased to take part in the celebration of the centenary of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU). One hundred years of growth and development is cause for great gratitude! I greet and thank Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça and Professor Isabel Capeloa Gil, the President of the Federation.”
This book was published on the occasion of the SUMMA EXHIBITION held at the Istituto Portoghese di Sant’Antonio in Rome from 29 April 2025 to 25 July 2025.
The world is not only built with the capital letters of the extraordinary, but it is also built with the small, anonymous seeds of hope that a community of innovation and knowledge, such as a university, produces every day. Catholic universities are necessary platforms for managing life with meaning and practicable hope. May this exhibition be a reference to what constitutes the central idea of a Catholic university, whose greatest contribution to the ecosystem it inhabits is above all this: to spread a “culture of hope” (Gaudium et Spes, 53), making all generations credible and committed actors.

The university evokes an imaginary of convergence, abundance, and distinction — a convivial space where individuals from diverse regions and cultures gather in the pursuit of truth. Abundance of knowledge, abundance of narratives, of peoples, of cultures. Celebrated at times as heroes, and at others vilified, universities have consistently stood at the forefront of societal transformation. The founding of the European university nearly a millennium ago marked a defining moment in the history of education, laying the foundation for institutions that would shape the intellectual landscape for centuries. Guided by the principles of faith, early universities played a transformative role in the cultivation and transmission of knowledge. From the former cathedral schools to the universitas magistrorum et scholarium, these institutions came to represent repositories of human intellectual achievement: a summa of disciplines, universal in both scope and aspiration.

O mundo não se constrói apenas com as letras maiúsculas do extraordinário, mas constrói-se também com as pequenas e anónimas sementes de esperança que uma comunidade de inovação e de conhecimento, como uma universidade, produz todos os dias. As universidades católicas são plataformas necessárias para gerir a vida com sentido e esperança praticável. Que esta exposição seja uma referência ao que constitui a ideia central de uma universidade católica, cujo maior contributo para o ecossistema que habita é sobretudo este: difundir uma «cultura da esperança» (Gaudium et Spes, 53), tornando todas as gerações actores credíveis e comprometidos.

A fundação da universidade europeia há quase um milénio marcou um momento decisivo na história da educação, lançando as bases para instituições que moldariam a paisagem intelectual durante séculos. Orientadas pelos princípios da fé, as primeiras universidades desempenharam um papel transformador no cultivo e na transmissão do conhecimento. Desde as antigas escolas catedrais até à universitas magistrorum et scholarium, estas instituições passaram a representar repositórios de realizações intelectuais humanas: uma summa de disciplinas, universal tanto no âmbito como na aspiração.
